Liberal Education Outcomes: A Preliminary Report On Student Achievement In College English-Chinese Translation Practice Report

The combination of professional education and liberal education becomes the major trend in Chinese higher education.Great achievements are made in the development of professional education and the explorations and practices of liberal education are deeply concerned by educators.The report,Liberal Education Outcomes:A Preliminary Report on Student Achievement in College,was published by Association of American College & University.It mainly introduces a series of liberal education outcomes that achieved by students in American colleges and universities.The aim of translating the report is to learn about the American liberal education outcomes and summarize linguistic features and writing style,meanwhile some cases are analyzed according to the text's characteristics.The most distinctive linguistic features are chosen including nominalization,parentheses and complex sentences through the detailed analysis.The translation methods for translating nominalization into verb-object relations or into clauses and conversion are proposed.The translation methods for parentheses are sentence-initial,preposition and recasting.Three translation methods are employed to deal with complex sentences including linear translation,division and reverse translation.The paper can serve as a useful reference to the researchers of liberal education in our country and translation studies and practices of the same text type or related topic.
