A Study On The Translation Strategies And Methods Of Cultural Specific Items In The German Translation Of Mo Yan's "Frog"

With the development of globalization,the relationship between Chinese and German culture has become ever closer.Literary translation has played an important role in intercultural communication.How to convey the cultural meaning behind the words to foreign readers is the core problem of translating Chinese literary works.The German translation of the Mo Yan's novel The Frog,which was translated by Sinologist Martina Hasse and was published in 2013,was highly valued by both literary critics and the public.The translation of culture-specific words is the focus of literary translation.The cultural-specific words in the novel The Frog are divided into five types,namely ecological,material,social,religious and lingual culture-specific words.The German translation will be analyzed on the basis of the translation strategies "domestication" and "foreignization" and Javier Franco Aixelá's translation methods,whereby the corresponding translation strategies and methods of each type of culture-specific words are summarized.We may draw the conclusion that Martina Hasse tends to alienate the culture-specific words.Domestication is considered an additional translation strategy.The choice of translation strategy and method for each type of culture-specific words depends on the lingual and cultural context.The innovation of the translation methods involves perservation to the form of the Chinese characters in the translation,creation of new compound words by the German word formation and introduction of the culture-specific words of the third culture etc.These innovative translation methods enrich the diversity of the German language and deepen the understanding of the German readers for the Chinese culture.
