A Comparative Study Of Chinese And American Junior High School Physical Education Textbooks

With the continuous development of Chinese curriculum reform in basic education,the theoretical and practical research of textbooks in each subjects has received much attention.Many publishers have revised and adapted PE textbooks for primary and secondary schools according to the new requirements of PE and health curriculum standards of the Ministry of Education,which has obviously improved the content quality and compilation level of PE textbooks.However,with the expansion of the main body of PE textbook writing,new problems and contradictions have arisen while promoting the characteristics of PE textbook.In addition,adapting the development to time is the requirement of education.Therefore,with the aim to promote the progress of education,textbooks should be constantly improved and upgraded in line with the requirements of time,and the form and content of them should also be timely updated.Based on the above considerations,this paper aims to compare the Chinese version of Junior High School Sports and Health and the American version of Human Kinetics Fitness for Life: Middle School(2nd Edition)from macro structure and micro structure,under the methods of literature review,text analysis and comparative study.The macro structure includes guiding ideology,basic structure and content of the textbook,while the micro structure is about the column setting,illustration,thinking exercises and text expression.Under this basis,the paper summarized the commonalities and differences between the two textbooks,and drew on the useful experience of Human Kinetics textbooks for the preparation of PEP textbooks in China.The study draws the following conclusions:1.Commonality of the two textbooks:(1)The guiding ideology of the two textbooks reflects the idea of paying attention to the healthy development of students.(2)Both versions of textbooks take students' sports life as the theme of cover design and pay attention to the display of different types of sports items.(3)The catalogs of the two editions of textbooks reflect their own compiling ideas and characteristics.(4)There are many types and rich contents of the columns in the two editions of textbooks,and both of them attach importance to the guidance and promotion of the columns.(5)Both textbooks pay attention to the role of illustrations,and in terms of the types and quantity of illustrations,both textbooks have the largest number of photo illustrations.(6)Both versions of textbooks pay great attention to the fusion of knowledge and real life in the selection of text content and column settings.2.Differences between the two textbooks:(1)PEP textbooks are composed of chapters and sections.The Human Kinetics textbook consists of units,chapters and lessons.(2)The contents of the textbook catalog of PEP edition were single,while the contents of the textbook catalog of Human Kinetics edition were clear and rich.(3)The textbooks of the PEP version attach great importance to the standardization of movements,while the textbooks of the Human Kinetics version attach great importance to the methods of improving students' physical fitness.(4)The textbook of PEP classifies each exercise into individual,while the textbook of Human Kinetics classifies the exercise items and expresses them according to their categories.(5)The setting of thinking exercises in the PEP edition textbooks was more related to motor skills,while the setting of thinking exercises in the Human Kinetics edition textbooks was more related to life.(6)The PEP textbook starts from the author's perspective,while the Human Kinetics textbook starts from the second-person perspective.3.Enlightenment to the compilation of PE textbooks in China:(1)Strengthen the interaction and communication with other disciplines.(2)Add "Instructions for Use" in the textbook.(3)Set columns flexibly to enhance the interest of the textbooks.(4)Use expressive skills to enhance the charm of texts.Based on the useful experience of textbook compilation in Human Kinetics,the following suggestions were proposed for textbook compilation in China:(1)To optimize the design of the catalog,enrich the content of the catalog,set the title form in the catalog multivariously,and enhance the retrieval ability of the catalog.(2)Expand the selection range of textbook content,and select more entertaining and practical textbook content from a wider selection range.(3)To improve the balance,pertinence and refinement of column Settings,appropriately delete some columns with different names but similar contents and functions to avoid complex layout.(4)Appropriately increase the types of thinking exercises,set more common daily tasks in life,and attach great importance to students' participation and the educational nature of tasks.(5)Strengthen the development of network teaching resources that are compatible with textbooks to widen the learning channels of students.(6)The introduction of knowledge of different disciplines enables the study of different disciplines to be no longer isolated,and enriches students' knowledge reserve while improving students' physical literacy.(7)Use more heuristic texts to express the text,increase the affinity and interest of the text,and promote students' interest in reading,so that the textbook is more acceptable to them.
