Graphic organizer is a graphic tool that visually represents the learning process and learning results,and has such functions as graphic information,problem solving and auxiliary reasoning.The academic concept of graphic organizer was put forward by James V.Hoffman in 1981.The research on graphic organizer abroad has developed from the initial exploration of its influence on teaching to the improvement and innovation of graphic organizer in teaching,and great achievements have been made in the past 40 years.It has been nearly twenty years since 2003 when the research on graphic organizer in mathematics education in China was introduced and applied in teaching.It is necessary to clarify the development of graphic organizers in China,analyze the research characteristics of graphic organizers in mathematics education research,integrate the functions of graphic organizers involved in mathematics textbooks and teaching plans,and systematically discuss the research and use of graphic organizers in mathematics teaching in China from theoretical level to practical level.First of all,the meta-analysis method is used to analyze the theoretical discussion and research hotspots of graphic organizers in mathematics education works,education journals and master's thesis,and the development path of graphic organizers research in mathematics education research in China is obtained.Secondly,the content analysis method is used to analyze the characteristics of graphic organizers representing knowledge in teaching materials and the specific functions of these graphic organizers.Finally,the case analysis method combined with interviews is used to understand the views of front-line mathematics teachers on graphic organizers and their implementation,and the results are compared with those of meta-analysis.The results are as follows:(1)The research on graphic organizers in China's mathematics education mainly focuses on concept maps and mind maps.Influenced by the contents of concept maps and mind maps in mathematics education works,the research on mathematics education in China is based on the function of concept maps,and the research focus gradually turns to mind maps after 2017;(2)There are seven kinds of graphic organizers in teaching materials,including chart,Wayne diagram,process block diagram,tree diagram,schematic diagram,structure diagram and line segment diagram,among which the most commonly used ones are chart and structure diagram,which have different functions in knowledge representation;(3)The graphic organizer is used as a visual tool to show knowledge in mathematics textbooks and instructional design,and the contents of chapters are summarized in the classroom summary.The graphic organizer is used as a teaching strategy in mathematics education research,which runs through the whole mathematics classroom teaching.(4)The commonly used graphic organizers in mathematics teaching practice in China are charts and structural charts,which are highly consistent with teaching materials and inconsistent with the results of mathematics education research.The cognitive attitude of mathematics teachers towards graphic organizers is consistent with the trend of mathematics education research.
