The Mathematics Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011 Edition)states"Classification is an important mathematical idea.In the teaching activities,students should gradually appreciate why and how to classify,how to determine the criteria of classification,how to recognize the nature of objects in the process of classification,and how to distinguish the different nature of different objects."In order to make students' learning meet the requirements of the mathematics curriculum standards,it is necessary to teach the method of classification and discussion ideas.However,in the actual teaching process influenced by many factors,there are still many problems in the teaching of categorical discussion ideas in junior high school mathematics,and the teaching effect does not reach the expected result.Therefore,how to effectively cultivate students' classification discussion ideas in mathematics classroom teaching is a problem worth studying.In this paper,by reviewing the literature,we have a preliminary understanding of the research of scholars at home and abroad on the thought method of mathematical classification discussion and its teaching,and we have conducted questionnaires and interviews with students and teachers respectively,mainly based on constructivist learning theory,cognitive structure learning theory,nearest development area theory,and Polya's mathematical question theory.Through the analysis of students'questionnaires and the investigation of students' ability level in categorical discussion,it was found that students did not have a good understanding of categorical discussion,and they did not have a clear understanding of the reasons for discussion caused by categorical discussion questions,the principles and steps of categorical discussion,or clear ideas of answers.At the same time,students were not well guided in the study habits and learning styles of classification discussion,and lacked systematic analysis and organization in the generalization and summarization of classification discussion and problem solving experience,so students' ability of classification discussion was naturally poor.Combining the valuable experiences obtained from the teacher interviews,the corresponding teaching strategies are given for the problems that exist when students learn the classification and discussion ideas:(1)digging deeply into the classification ideas contained in the textbook,(2)exploring in problem-driven,(3)generating in discussion,(4)comprehending in problem solving,(5)consolidating in practice,and(6)improving in reflection.Finally,the strategy was applied to design the classroom teaching of the lesson "Practical problems and quadratic equations-telephone billing",which reaped good results and has some reference significance for teachers to teach the classification and discussion method of thinking.Practice shows that teachers dig deep into the ideas of classification and discussion contained in the teaching materials,and actively try to apply the teaching strategy of classification and discussion in teaching practice,through the problems constantly drive students to think,the combination of investigation and discussion and practice consolidation,such a teaching method not only makes the classroom atmosphere active,but also makes students' thinking ability and investigation ability get exercise,more conducive to students to understand the mathematical ideas of classification and discussion.
