The "Compulsory Education Curriculum Standards for Mathematics(2011 Edition)" has clear requirements for ruler drawing,and the latest "Compulsory Education Curriculum Standards for Mathematics(2022 Edition)" issued by the Ministry of Education has also added ruler drawing to the section on graphing and geometry in primary schools,which shows that ruler drawing is playing an increasingly important role in improving students' geometric intuition and enhancing their hands-on skills.However,with the emergence of various educational software and drawing tools,students' understanding of ruler drawing is gradually blurred and they are often at a loss when faced with some ruler drawing problems.Therefore,this paper aims to investigate students' ability at ruler drawing in Grade 8,understand the problems of students in ruler drawing,and provide teachers with feasible suggestions for teaching.This paper is based on the "Compulsory Education Mathematics Curriculum Standards(2011 Edition)",and takes into account the presentation of relevant contents in the textbook and the examination of relevant contents in the Chinese Mathematics Examination.On the one hand,a questionnaire was used to find out students' knowledge of ruler drawing,and then the results of the test were used to analyze the problems that students encountered in the process of ruler drawing.On the other hand,interviews were conducted with teachers to find out how they dealt with the content of ruler diagrams in their teaching,and to suggest corresponding teaching suggestions.In this study,241 eighth grade students from two middle schools in Guangzhou were used as the subjects.The data collected were statistically analyzed with the help of SPSS26.0 and Excel software.The research found that the students had five problems: poor mastery of basic ruler drawing,poor ability to make complex diagrams,poor understanding of diagramming principles,poor ability to synthesize geometric knowledge,and poor diagramming habits.By collating the typical mistakes of students and interviewing the teachers concerned,several teaching suggestions were made for teachers' reference: strengthen the connection between the knowledge of ruler drawing,focus on the overall construction of the knowledge of ruler drawing,expand the teaching of variations of ruler drawing,strengthen students' awareness of the application of ruler drawing,and deepen students' understanding of the value of ruler drawing.It is expected that this study will enhance students' understanding of ruler drawing,and thus effectively promote the development of students' ruler drawing skills.
