This translation report takes Chinese fisheries texts as the source texts and focuses upon the translation of noun phrases which are found to be abundant in the source texts through text analysis.Guided by the ideas of Reiss’ s text typology, this translation report analyzes various noun phrases merging with their micro-and macro-context based on Biber’s classification of noun phrases. It explores how to adhere to the text type in the translated texts, how to reproduce the language elements and pragmatic elements of the source texts, and how to achieve the equivalence of text types, language elements, and pragmatic elements,so as to obtain a text that is consistent with the source text type.In this translation practice,Reiss’ s ideas of translation are applied to the translation of various noun phrases in fisheries texts, and then the structural features and translation skills of simple noun phrases,“premodifiers + head noun” phrases, and “head noun +postmodifiers” phrases are summarized. It is found that the translation of simple noun phrases is essentially the translation of nouns in context, particularly the translation of noun phrases such as “determiner + head noun”,which often extends the original meaning of the head noun according to the context. The modifiers of complex noun phrases, whether preceding or following the head noun, all serve as a form of attributives of the head noun, and their semantic meanings vary logically though they’re structurally restricted. Therefore, complex noun phrases can be translated flexibly by taking into account the meaning of Chinese sentences. It is also proposed that for modifiers prior to the head noun, free translation, conversion of part-of-speech and abstraction translation should be used when necessary;for modifiers after the head noun,it is necessary to figure out the logical relationship, and the separate translation method can often be applied. In the translation of fisheries texts,it is suggested to consider the three facets of literature, language and pragmatics, and taking into account the translation of noun phrases will help translators to understand and reproduce the original text clearly and thoroughly, and this will provide a new framework for the translation of fisheries texts.
