| The Love Songs of W.E.B.Du Bois is the first historical novel of the African-American poetess,Honoree Fanonne Jeffers.In this work,the author tells the family story of an African-American family from the history of the slave trade in the colonial period to the present day in a two-line crossing way,and re-examines the identity of Native Americans and enslaved African Americans from the perspective of a modern African girl.The translation material of this report is mainly selected from Sections 2-3 of Chapter Two in this novel,with a total of 13043 words.This part introduces a series of stories about the racial cognition that Ailey experienced during her growth in high school and the history of her families being traced back.This translation practice is guided by Professor Hu Gengshen’s Eco-Translatology,which focuses on “three-dimensional” transformation and translation as adaptation and selection.In terms of the linguistic dimension,the translator uses free translation,part-of-speech conversion,logical-order adjustment and other translation methods to convert polysemy,nominalization and logical order of sentence,so as to make the translated text in line with the target readers’ reading habits and enhance readability.In terms of the cultural dimension,the use of literal translation,amplification,adaptation,four-character structure and footnotes to help readers clear the barriers of cultural differences and explain the cultural connotation of the source text.In terms of the communicative dimension,the translator considers the characters’ language,idioms and aesthetic effect,which can not only convey the communicative intention of the original author,but also realize the cultural exchange between the readers and the source text.Through this translation practice,the translator realizes that in translating historical novels,understanding the styles and characteristics from the work and the author’s writing background are the keys for translation.In addition,following the reading habits of the target language readers and adapting to the translation ecological environment for conveying the authentic and faithful translated texts are indispensable in the practice report.The “three dimensional” transformation provides a meaningful guidance for the structure and framework of the translation practice.It also has practical significance in improving the quality of translation for similar literary works. |
