| Interpreting fluency refers to the timeliness of interpreting release and the proficiency and rapidity of the target language generation, reflecting an interpreter’s state in cognitive processing. In simultaneous interpreting, fluency is an important criterion to evaluate the quality of interpreting and a major factor for the audience to judge the performance of the interpreter. Therefore, the study of interpreting fluency is of great significance for improving interpreting quality. On that basis,a CCTV documentary How Do We Fight Against Depression is taken in this thesis as the material for interpreting practice to discuss the problems affecting interpreting fluency in simulated simultaneous interpreting and solutions to these problems in combination with cases. From the characteristics of interpreting materials, factors like lots of professional terms, constantly changing speaking roles and excessively fast speaking speed of source language and excessive information density may cause difficulties for interpreter in simulated simultaneous interpreting and affect the interpreting fluency.Combined with specific case analysis in the practice, the problems affecting interpreting fluency in the practice are divided into three categories by audio metric decoding, interpreting production and recording playback, namely the listening decoding errors caused by insufficient lexical and phonetic hearing, the improper pauses due to implicit logic information of the source language and insufficient short-term memory capacity of the interpreter, and the hesitations caused by the complex sentence structure of the source language and the long ear-voice span of the interpreter. To deal with the problems affecting fluency in interpreting, corresponding solutions are proposed in this thesis, including deducing the meaning of words according to the context and searching for phonetic clues to guess the pronunciation meaning, selecting the cohesive markers properly to avoid improper pauses and using the blocks of information to strengthen short-term memory, deconstructing and reorganizing to reduce hesitations and grasping the core information to shorten the ear-voice span of the interpreter. The above-mentioned problems affecting interpreting fluency and analysis of the corresponding solutions come from the interpreter’s interpreting practices. These case studies show that the solutions can improve the interpreting fluency and then improve the interpreting quality. It is hoped that this interpreting practice can provide a reference for other interpreters to interpret similar materials. |
