The academic exchange between China and the West in various fields is promoted by the development of global economy and deepening of Chinese and Western cultural communications, with languages as the carrier. The book Challenging the Monolingual Mindset is such an excellent research work. This book is co-authored by 16 scholars and compiled by the linguistic experts,Prof.John Hajek and Prof.Yvette Slaughter, from the University of Melbourne and published in 2014.This book consists of three parts, containing a total of 14 theses. The author selected two theses from the second part of the book, which mainly introduces immigrants' contributions to the construction of bilingual and multilingual cultural environment in Australia.Challenging the Monolingual Mindset is a typical book of social-science with numerous long English sentences in it.The amount of topic about translating long English sentences in social-science text is still very small. To some extent, this thesis is significant for later study on the translation of the same type of text. The translation of long English sentences is a major difficulty in the translation process.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory, the author divides long sentences into three types, they are long sentences with compound sentences, long sentences with complex sentences, and long sentences with double complex sentences according to the sentences structure. In order to make the translation more faithful and smooth, the author chooses the sequential method to translate long sentences with compound sentences,Inverted Sequence Method corresponds to complex long sentences, and the segmentation method corresponds to double complex sentences. This thesis is made up of four parts. The first chapter is about background of the original text, analysis of the source text and translation process;the second chapter is mainly about the origin and development of functional equivalence theory, the features and classification of long English sentences;the third chapter gives case analysis of typical long English sentences and translation strategies;the fourth chapter concerns the limitations and reflections on this thesis.
