As one of the literary symbols that cannot be ignored in the field of poetry,“Lotus” is a very important symbol of traditional culture in both China and South Korea.It also has great significance in the field of literature.Meanwhile,as a common image in poetic works,it is appreciated and loved by literati and scholars.In the poetry of China and Korea,it can be found almost everywhere.Related to its unique natural and humanistic social attributes,lotus imagery is often associated with "woman," "love," "character," "religion," etc.Therefore,it is no coincidence that Chinese and Korean poets use lotus in their poems.With comparative study method,this paper analyzes lotus imagery in classical Chinese poetry as well as Korean Chinese poetry in the context of the East Asian literary academic circle.On the basis of this,the paper aims to link the teaching of lotus imagery with the situational approach in teaching Chinese as a foreign language in Korean,in order to propose effective teaching strategies.This paper is divided into five parts.The first part mainly discusses the reason and the background for choosing the topic,the research method,and the significance of innovation.The second part deals with the origin and development of lotus imagery in classical Chinese poetry,the development of lotus imagery in Korea,and the main cultural symbolism of lotus.Through a comparative analysis of selected poems containing lotus imagery in the classical Chinese poem Quan Tang Shi and the Korean Han Poetry Ji Ya,the third part summarizes the similarities in the main symbolic meanings of lotus imagery,which are symbolic of a gentleman’s elegance,youthful beauty,labor and sincere love.In addition to this,a brief overview is given of the differences in the symbolic meaning of lotus imagery in poetry between the two countries due to the different values of the literati and the different national cultures represented by the lotus imagery.The fourth section briefly discusses the role of the situational approach and the combination of poetic imagery and situational approach in teaching Chinese poetry in Korea,and the last chapter uses lotus imagery as an example to construct a specific teaching design of Wang Changling’s Cai Lian Qu.In general,from the theoretical discussion of lotus imagery to the comparative analysis of specific poetic works in China and Korea to the specific teaching design,this paper aims to propose some innovative and effective suggestions for teaching Chinese in Korea,especially the teaching of poetic imagery.
