The source text for this English-Chinese translation practice report is excerpted from chapters 5 and 6 of the book Sharing Economy and Big Data Analytics published in 2020.First of all,Chapter 5 focuses on explaining the huge changes in big data and its characteristics.Chapter 6 provides a detailed explanation of the term“ analytics ” which is closely related to “big data”.The two chapters exhibit the application of data and analytics to bring inspiration to the readers, especially for enterprises to seize the opportunities and use big data to optimize decision-making.According to Katharina Reiss’ text typology theory, the source text is mainly informative. Moreover, the text is characterized by the frequent appearance of pronouns, explicit inter-sentence cohesive devices, and frequent appearance of substitution and reiteration.Due to the text type and textual characteristics,as well as the differences in ways of thinking and expressions between English and Chinese, how to make the translation semantically and logically clear and natural and how to deal with the cohesive devices are the difficulty in the translation process.Guided by Halliday and Hasan’s cohesion theory, the report is bent on the translation of cohesive devices in discourse. The report clarifies that cohesion is a semantic relationship embodied through the lexical and grammatical systems. Then, with the help of Halliday and Hasan’s classification of cohesive devices and according to the forms and roles of cohesive components, the report classifies the cohesive devices into four categories, namely, reference, substitution, conjunction and reiteration. On that basis, specific translation methods are proposed for the translation problem. In the end,the translator hopes that this report can help readers enhance their understanding of cohesive devices in informative texts and provide reference and research materials for the translation of this type of texts.
