Abstract/Summary:
This translation report is based on the C-E translation practice of Appreciation of Ancient Chinese Inscriptions and Calligraphy.The excerpted text mainly introduces the origin and characteristics of Chinese characters.It emphasizes on the representative calligraphers like Wang Xizhi,Yan Zhenqing,Zhiyong,Huairen and Su Shi etc.and the appreciation of their representative calligraphic works,as well as the relationship between calligraphy development and social changes.As an informative text about Chinese calligraphy,it contains a lot of professional words about Chinese calligraphy,expressions with cultural connotations and sentences in classical Chinese.Moreover,the text has the characteristic of typical Chinese writing style,emphasizing on parataxis and loose structure.Based on the features of the source text and considering the translation purpose of spreading Chinese calligraphy culture and faithfully represent the source text,the translator adopts Skopos theory to guide the translation and expects to produce a readable and acceptable target text.This translation report mainly analyzes the translation of the source text at the lexical,syntactic and discourse levels.Under the guidance of Skopos theory,the translator adopts literal translation,free translation and addition,division,annotation,footnote etc.to elaborate the specific problems in the translation process so as to make the translation conform to the logical thinking and reading habits of the target readers.In the process of this translation,the translator searched the C-E and E-C texts and materials related to calligraphy culture.Then,the translator explored the translation methods and techniques of English translation of calligraphy culture text by analyzing the characteristics of the source text,and summarized the major findings and limitations.Meanwhile,the translator expects that this translation report could get more people know about Chinese calligraphy culture and provide some references for the translation of the similar texts.
