A Report On The C-E Translation Of Xx Maintenance Manual For Braking System(Excerpt) Based On The Communicative Translation Theory

In recent years,China’s automobile industry structure becomes increasingly reasonable and its international competitiveness is greatly improved.The domestic automobile market has sustainable development potential,since Chinese automobile enterprises increase overseas investment and change their export mode.While the export volume of automobiles is so huge,the after-sales service of automobiles also need to keep pace,including professional and practical automobile maintenance manuals.The text of this translation practice report comes from the “braking system” chapter of XX brand automobile maintenance manual,which introduces the diagnosis methods and working process of different parts in the braking system with the form of text,pictures and tables.Guided by the communicative translation theory,the paper chooses semantic translation and communication translation strategies to discuss the translation methods in the text by case analysis.Under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory,some feasible translation methods are applied to the target text to achieve the fidelity and communication of the source text.In terms of lexical level,it is mainly based on semantic translation to combine the literal translation and transliteration which can accurately reproduce the content of the source text.The part of speech conversion enables the translation to conform to the general norms and respect the given thinking patterns of the target readers.For the translation of technical terms,the synthetic method is used to explain the terms,which is also the most important way to form and expand the scientific and technological words.From the perspective of the syntactic level,the translation adopts the reconstruction and division of sentence structure to obtain a clear and coherent translation.Due to the language differences between Chinese and English,it is necessary to adjust the short sentences of the source text in a coordinated manner by reasonable segmenting and combining.In order to enhance the authority of the text,the active voice in the source text is adjusted to the passive voice that expresses the objectivity in English.To reach the effective communication,the dynamic syntactic structure in the source text is translated into the static syntactic structure which is in line with English expression habits and easy to be accepted by the target readers.Taking the textual level into consideration,the thinking process of the source text is embodied on the coherence of the target text.The coherence of the text can be achieved by selecting referents and conjunctions or omitting the redundant words.In this way,the communication and information of the source text are expressed in the translation accurately.In conclusion,high-quality translation can help the target readers understand the fault causes and maintenance methods of braking system comprehensively.The paper aims to provide some references for Newmark’s translation theory and applicability to technical text in a certain extent.
