| Based on the author’s English-Chinese interpreting of a mock conference, this report analyzes the note-taking problems in this practice and proposes coping strategies.Previous studies on note-taking in consecutive interpreting show that notes should be simple and arranged in a reasonable layout, and include key words, numbers, proper nouns and technical terms of the source speech. After analyzing the audio files of the source and target speeches, notes, and the video of the note-taking process, this report categorizes note-taking problems in the interpreting practice into three types, namely, incomplete notes, redundant notes and improper layout.Under the guidance of the Effort Model, the author finds that note-taking problems led to long pauses, information loss and misinterpretations in the target speech. To deal with the incomplete notes, the interpreter should enhance interpreting task preparation and allocate processing capacity appropriately during interpreting. To address the problems of redundant notes and improper layout, the report introduces techniques of simplifying notes and optimizing layout and demonstrates the application of such techniques with examples. |
