A Practice Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Conflicts Over Marine And Coastal Common Resources Causes,Governance,and Prevention (Excerpt) From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

In recent years,the global marine industry has been undergoing rapid transformation and upgrading,as well as technological advances.The rational utilization of marine resources has become the critical driving force for the steady development of the marine economy of various countries and the translation of marine trade texts has been widely valued.Marine trade text pays attention to reader effect and focuses on case facts to stimulate readers’ resonance,which parallels the functional equivalence theory that lays emphasis on readers’ sentiment.The author of this practice report takes a marine trade text named Conflicts over Marine and Coastal Common Resources Causes,Governance,and Prevention as an example,and selects Chapter 6 The Rules,Rights,and Effects of Marine Resource Use of the book as the original text of the translation practice.The author discusses the effective methods of E-C translation of marine trade texts on the basis of functional equivalence theory.In the process of translation practice,the author discovers that the marine trade text has the lexical characteristics of a large quantity of technical words with rare meanings,unfamiliar proper nouns without background knowledge,and the syntactic characteristics of complex sentences,nested multi-level clauses and phrases.Therefore,the author pays attention to readers’ sentiment on the basis of functional equivalence theory,and examines the effectiveness of lexical translation by applying translation methods of amplification,and semantic extension as well as the effectiveness of sentence translation by applying translation methods of division,inversion,conversion and restructuring.This translation practice report demonstrates that functional equivalence theory can provide useful theoretical guidance for the translation of marine trade texts.The translation methods and strategies,based on the lexical and syntactic problems and presented by the author of the report,have some instructive effects on the E-C translation of analogous texts.
