The year 2020 marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Leica Oskar Barnack Award, and Leica has organized a global photography exhibition and published a photography brochure to commemorate this special year. This English-Chinese translation report is based on the excerpt from the brochure Leica Oskar Barnack 40 th Anniversary Award. The source text,as art publicity text, introduces award-winning works in the past 40 years. The original text features rich information and vivid description, aiming at conveying the cultural implications and emotional connotations of the photographic works. To provide high-quality rendition,Newmark’s Text Typology theory is chosen to guide this translation task.According to the theory, the original text belongs to the informative and vocative text. After analyzing the source text’s linguistic features, the translator chooses the communicative translation and discusses specific translation techniques through concrete examples at three levels. At the word level, the original text contains numerous modifiers and the translator uses addition and negation to ensure the vividness of the rendering. In some cases, conversion is adopted to conform to the language habits of the target audience. For high-frequency words, selecting multiple versions for one word is aimed to reduce abstract expressions and subtly convey different emotional connotations. At the syntactic level, for long sentences in the source text, division and restructuring are employed to make the target text more concise and comprehensible.According to specific contexts, some passive sentences are transformed into active sentences to make the rendering more idiomatic while the others are retained the passive voice to convey the implied meanings. At the textual level, the original text uses many quotations, and the subjects in the discourse change frequently. The translator switches the narrative perspective, and transforms direct and indirect quotations to enhance the coherence and consistency. The translator has benefited a lot from the existing research outcomes in publicity text translation and Newmark’s Text Typology theory, and it is hoped that this translation task can provide guidance and insights for similar translation practice. |
