| This report excerpts from Doris Lessing’s(1919-2013)last science fiction novel,The Story of General Dann and Mara’s Daughter,Griot and the Snow Dog,and translates the first half of it into Chinese.The first half of the work tells the protagonist Dann’s journey after the next Ice Age from a third person perspective.This journey not only records what Dann sees,hears and thinks,but also reflects human exploration and thinking of nature.The translation and study of his psychological process helps to re-understand the relationship between man and nature.The outstanding feature of the source text is that it contains a large number of psychological description of characters.This report carries out the Chinese translation practice on the first half of the source text,and focuses on the analysis of the psychological description of characters.On the basis of careful study and analysis of the work,the definition,classification and literature review of psychological description of characters are elaborated,laying a solid foundation for the English to Chinese translation of psychological description of characters.The psychological description of characters can be divided into five categories,but this report mainly discusses the three categories that are prominent in the work,namely,indirect thought,free indirect thought,and narrative report of a thought act.Under the guidance of the principle of equivalent translation,this report analyzes the best equivalent translation of psychological description of characters from three aspects,including semantic equivalence,pragmatic equivalence and aesthetic equivalence.Through examples and demonstrations,it is concluded that the translation methods for indirect thought include linear translation and division,the translation methods for free indirect thought include affirmative and negative translation,amplification,and the translation methods for narrative report of a thought act include paraphrase and restructuring translation.The study finds that thinking from the reader’s point of view,focusing on the acceptance of the Chinese translation and advocating the adoption of active and pragmatic principle of equivalent translation have important guiding significance for the Chinese translation of psychological description of characters.At the same time,under the guidance of the principle of equivalent translation,the translation methods adopted are also focused on conveying the literary effect of the psychological description in the source text,so as to better achieve the translation goal and promote the exchange and communication between China and foreign countries.This report aims to draw the attention of experts in the translation field to the translation of science fiction,and promotes interdisciplinary communication between science and literature using science fiction as the medium. |
