| The current status of China in the international community has set off a strong wave of Chinese language popularization and learning. Many foreigners are keen to learn Chinese language and Chinese culture by watching Chinese movies and TV series. As a result, overseas audiences are keen to receive a large number of Chinese films and TV series that are exported to their countries. The Zhen Huan Zhuan or Empresses in the Palace,as an enduring TV drama on ancient China’s imperial palace, has caused a wave of excitement both at home and abroad. It has been broadcast for more than ten years and is still very popular.Meanwhile, the translation and dissemination of its subtitles have aroused the interest of researchers. At the same time,Eco-translatology,as a native translation theory in China,is becoming increasingly mature and has extensively been applied in translation studies. With the three-dimensional transformations, the approach to Translation as Adaptation and Selection and translational Eco-environment as the theoretical basis, this thesis takes as the object of study some translated subtitles in the Empresses in the Palace, adopting the research methods of theoretical research and case analysis to conduct a comparative study of some specific English-Chinese examples in the drama, and analyze the translation strategies and methods used in the Chinese translation of the subtitles of the drama. This thesis attempts to explore the different translation methods chosen by the translators to satisfy the conversion and adaptive selection in the three dimensions of language, culture and communication, and demonstrates the adaptive choices made by the translators mainly on the basis of the three dimensions. The research findings are that in the process of translation, the translator needs to adapt to the translation Eco-environment of the source text and select the ideal target text. The translation methods in Eco-translatology refer to the transformations in the three dimensions of language, communication and culture,in which the translator’s subjectivity is also embodied.Through the case study,we can draw the following conclusions.First, different from other translation text types, the TV drama’s subtitle has its unique characteristics and structure.Different translation methods have different characteristics and advantages in the subtitle translation process of film and television plays, especially in the processing of characteristic words.Cultural translation requires translators to have various abilities, such as a deep understanding of ancient Chinese culture, readers’ cultural level and literary taste, combined with translation strategies and methods, and flexible use,so as to achieve the best translation effect.Secondly, translation needs to adapt to and choose the translation ecological environment, which is reflected in the flexible transformation of linguistic dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension. In order to achieve the best translation effect, translators need to understand the ancient Chinese culture, readers’ cultural level and literary taste, and combine translation strategies and methods for flexible use.Secondly, translators need to adapt to and choose the ecological environment of translation and make flexible changes in language, culture and communicative dimensions. At the same time, translators also need to have professional qualities and flexibly use different translation methods to convey Chinese culture.Due to the differences in national characteristics, regional characteristics and times, subtitle translation will also show great cultural differences. Therefore, translators should consider the cultural characteristics of the target audience so that they can generate cultural resonance by watching subtitles. This requires that during subtitle translation, the overall style of subtitles should be coordinated with the historical background of the original text to adapt to the identity and situation of the characters. Therefore, when analyzing the Empresses in the Palace, translators must consider the correctness of subtitle translation and choose the most suitable translation strategies and methods. As far as the linguistic dimension transformation is concerned, the translators of the drama reconstruct sentences by omitting or adding sentence elements, and makes coherent the meaning of the target text by omitting or adding corresponding cohesive words. As for the cultural dimension,in order to fully convey Chinese culture and enable the target language audience to fully understand it,translators use free translation to effectively translate cultural words and idioms with Chinese characteristics. As for the communicative dimension, the translators use conversion and free translation to convey information for the purpose of communication. In general,in the process of subtitle translation of the Empresses in the Palace, the translators,on the basis of adapting to the translation Eco-environment,has basically overcome the language barriers and cultural differences,so as to help the target language audience better appreciate this classic ancient Chinese palace drama. This thesis explores the subtitle translation of television plays from the perspective of Eco-translatology,with a view to providing help for the subtitle translation of film and television plays in the future. |
