| The translation report is based on the translation practice of Chapter 2 and Chapter 4 from the book Journey to the Edge of Reason: The life of Kurt G(?)del, which records the extraordinary life of mathematician and logician Kurt G(?)del and his revolutionary achievements. This book is a biography whose linguistic features are diverse. Therefore, the translator chooses Skopos Theory proposed by functionalist school to guide this translation practice. This theory holds that translation is a purposeful and cross-cultural communication activity, and translators should adopt different translation strategies according to different translation purposes.Skopos Theory has three main principles, namely, the rule of Skopos, the rule of coherence, and the rule of fidelity. At the lexical level, literal translation with annotations and corresponding translation are adopted, under the rule of Skopos and the rule of fidelity;at the syntactical level, the translator utilizes some modification such as amplification, division, and readjustment of sentence order, under the rule of coherence;at the textual level, under the rule of coherence, the lexical cohesion is implemented to reproduce the linguistic features and logic implications in the source text.Through the report, the translator hopes that the translation may provide references for Chinese reader who are interested in G(?)del’s idea and arithmetical history. The translation of such biographies would promote intercultural communication by the dissemination of classic images.Meanwhile, this report intends to cast new light on biography translation. |
