All languages have redundancy. It is inevitable, and cannot be removed completely.A fluent and simple interpretation with proper redundancy would be ideal for any interpreter, but it is hard to achieve, because,in practice, all kinds of disturbances and distractions can cause over-redundancies like meaningless fillers and repeated words and sentences. In the end, quality, compromised;time, wasted;and even worse, audience, misled. This thesis is based on the mock conference of William A.Haseltine’s speech at Brookings Institution. The original speech and the interpretation are transcribed into text and analyzed.According to the result,4 kinds of over-redundancies are shown in the output: meaningless fillers, repeat, backtrack, and invalid addition. The analysis also shows that the major causes are at the stages of listening,note-taking and speaking.Targeted solutions are suggested in this thesis, including: focus on main frame and logic structure;broaden spectrum of materials for exercise;unify symbols in the same bloc;sustain a sense on notes’ structure;control the pace of taking notes;pre-check before interpreting;learn more prefabricated chunks for quicker transcoding. The author hopes that,by discussing causes and solutions of over-redundancy in this case, this thesis can contribute more voice for the research of over-redundancy in English-to-Chinese interpreting, offer some aid to those who are studying this topic, and help interpreters and fellow learners to contain over-redundancy and improve their output in their future practice.
