An English-chinese Translation Report On Weaponization Of Neurosciences Under The Guidance Of Reiss’s Text Typology Theory

In recent years,applying neuroscience to military field has become a major topic of world military development.As a part of the author’s contribution to the NATO Operations 2040 study by the NATO Innovation Hub,Weaponization of Neurosciences is a forward-looking report.Selecting this text as the translation material and taking Reiss’ s Text Typology theory as the theoretical framework,the translation methods and techniques of different text types are combed and summarized in this translation practice report.Reiss’ s Text Typology theory classifies texts into three types,namely informative texts,expressive texts and operative texts.Weaponization of Neurosciences is mainly an informative text,with a small amount of expressive and operative texts.The translation of informative texts is required to convey the original information concisely and clearly.At the lexical level,translation techniques,such as annotation,amplification and conversion,are used to address translation problems in terminology,part of speech and tenses.At the syntactic level,translation techniques,including voice change,division and inversion,are adopted to deal with the translation of voice and long and complex sentences.At the textual level,in response to cohesion and coherence of the text,translation techniques of amplification,omission and repetition are applied.In terms of the operative text and the expressive text,literal translation and free translation are applied to solve the translation difficulties of slogans and terms in the operative text,as well as rhetoric and figurative expressions in the expressive text.Through this translation practice,the translator found that Reiss’ s Text Typology theory can guide the translator to analyze the text types of Weaponization of Neurosciences,and thus adopt diverse translation methods and techniques for specific translation problems in different text types so as to improve the quality of the translation and provide reference for the English-Chinese translation of the similar texts.
