Objective:Sleep plays an important role in regulating the body’s circadian rhythm and the system of homeostasis within the body, and is also used as an important indicator for evaluating physical and mental health.Sleep problems are highly prevalent in the neurotic personality college student population, which adversely affects their physical and mental health and learning ability.Music intervention as a non-pharmacological treatment to promote sleep is widely and spontaneously applied by the college student population, but there are many factors affecting music intervention and its effects are still unclear. Therefore, this study adopts ambient music as an intervention tool, and takes college students with neurotic personality tendency as an entry point to further clarify the correlation between neurotic personality tendency and the occurrence of sleep problems among college students by investigating the current sleep status, main performance and personality tendency of college students with sleep problems, and then exploring the effect of ambient music on sleep, psychological mood and sleep quality of college students with neurotic personality tendency in a real environment. Finally, the effect of ambient music on sleep quality and learning ability of college students with neurotic personality tendency was further verified by the gold standard of sleep monitoring.Methods:1.The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index Inventory(PSQI),the Big Five Personality Inventory,Second Edition(BFI-2),and a self-administered demographic questionnaire were used to investigate the current sleep quality and personality traits of 1171 college students.2.110 college students with neurotic personality tendencies were recruited for the somatotropic experiment, which was conducted for 5 weeks, with a blank week without any intervention in week 1 and a music intervention week in weeks 2 to 5.Subjective sleep quality data were collected using the PSQI,objective sleep quality data were collected using somatic motion recorders, and mental status data were collected using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI)and the Beck Depression Inventory(BDI-Ⅱ).The data were analyzed and processed using mixed-effects models and repeated measures.3.Thirty college students with neurotic personality tendencies were recruited as subjects and randomly assigned to the blank control group and the music intervention group. The sleep monitoring and objective sleep data were collected from neurotic college students by polysomnography, and the next-day fatigue, concentration, and memory were measured by classical psychological paradigm experiments to observe the daytime functional changes of neurotic college students.Results:1.The questionnaire data showed that 47.31% of the total number of college students had a subjective sleep quality PSQI score ≥8,of which 63.18% reflected the presence of difficulty falling asleep,42.24% had difficulty maintaining sleep, and 44.22% had early awakening.54.15% of college students with sleep problems had neurotic personality tendencies.2.The mixed-effects model showed that compared to the blank week, the subjective sleep quality PSQI scores, objective sleep latency of neurotic personality-prone college students were higher at week 1(β=-0.862,P<0.001;β=-1.047,P=0.006),week 2(β=-1.114,P<0.001;β=-1.069,P= 0.005),week 3(β=-1.309,P<0.001;β=-1.497,P<0.001),and week 4(β=-1.392,P<0.001;β=-1.529,P<0.001);state anxiety and trait anxiety in college students with neurotic personality tendencies were different at week 3 of receiving the ambient music intervention(β=-1.994,P<0.001;β=-1.039,P=0.028),and week 4(β=-2.015,P<0.001;β=-1.889,P<0.001)differed from the blank week;the degree of depressive symptoms in college students with neurotic personality tendencies differed between week 1(β=-1.115,P=0.016),week 4(β=-2.015,P<0.001;β=-1.889,P<0.001)of receiving the ambient music intervention, and week week 3(β=-1.608,P=0.001)and week 4(β=-2.248,P<0.001)differed from the blank week.3.In terms of sleep quality, compared to the control group, the ambient music intervention group had statistically significant differences in N1 latency(4.000[3.000,6.000]vs 10.000[7.500,12.000],P=0.003),N2 latency(6.000[5.500,9.000] vs 12.500[9.500,17.500],P=0.006),N3 latency(Z=3.090,P=0.002),and N3 total duration(16.000[13.000,19.500] vs34.500[22.000,46.000],P=0.002)were statistically different;compared to the pre-test in the music intervention group, the post-test was significantly different in N1-SOL(4.000[3.000,6.000] vs 9.000[4.000,11.500],P=0.047)and N3 total duration(99.800±22.327 vs 109.433±27.281,P=0.040).4.In terms of cognitive function, the differences were statistically significant in the music intervention group compared to the control group in terms of ANT accuracy(96.154±2.851 vs 98.333±1.247,P=0.016)and ANT response time(590.592±81.227 vs683.808±134.055,P=0.045);compared to the music intervention There were statistically significant differences in fatigue response time(422.454±251.032 vs 260.113±85.079,P=0.017)and ANT accuracy(99.000[98.000,99.000] vs 97.000[94.000,98.000],P=0.014)in the post-test compared to the pre-test in the group. Conclusion:Sleep problems are common among college students, mainly manifested as difficulty in falling asleep, and the percentage of college students with neurotic personality tendencies is the highest among those with sleep problems.Ambient music can not only improve the sleep quality of college students with neurotic personality tendencies by shortening the length of sleep and extending the total length of deep sleep, but also alleviate their anxiety level and depression level, improve fatigue, enhance concentration, and have a certain effect on improving the learning ability of college students with neurotic personality tendencies. In addition,we suggest using ambient music interventions for 7 days or more to address the sleep problems of college students with neurotic personality tendencies who mainly have difficulty falling asleep.
