Teacher is the core element that affects the quality of education system and its quality has been widely concerned all over the world.As the supply of teachers’ team,the quality of teacher candidates is of great importance to the quality of teachers.The quality of initial teacher training at University College London(UCL)has a global reputation.And the UCL has produced a large quantity of excellent teachers for England and other parts of the UK.The outstanding supply pool of its teacher candidates is a significant basis for this excellent achievement.China has made a number of achievements in assuring the quality of the supply pool of teacher candidates.However,there are still some problems to be resolved.A high-quality supply pool of teacher candidates is generally considered to be one of the characteristics of excellent education system.And it also plays a significant part in encouraging the development of British education.Against this background,the UCL actively carries out the practice for assuring the quality of the supply pool of student teachers.To be specific,attracting excellent teacher candidates through various ways,publicizing initial teacher training programs through a wide range of channels and controlling the admission and selection of teacher candidates according to strict standards are all the useful ways that the UCL use to ensure the quality of the supply pool of student teachers.Lots of achievements of the quality assurance practice are made,including attracting plenty of students to attend the initial teacher training programs successfully and admitting lots of high-quality student teachers.Besides,these students develop well in the subsequent training.But meanwhile,the UCL also faces the challenges of unbalanced gender structure of student teachers and poor attractiveness of several initial teacher training programs.Even so,the valuable experience of the practice at the UCL can still provide something inspiring for our country to assure the quality of the supply pool of teacher candidates.Nowadays,the attraction of initial teacher training programs to excellent students remains to be intensified and the quality of the supply pool of teacher candidates still has room for improvement in China.According to the successful experience of the UCL,we should give top priority to building the strength of initial teacher training programs and enhancing the publicity of them to improve the quality assurance practice in China.Meanwhile,setting diversified entry requirement of initial teacher training programs and investigating the quality of teacher candidates comprehensively are also effective approaches to guarantee the enrollment of high-quality teacher candidates.
