Space concept is an important learning content in the compulsory education stage, playing an important role in cultivating students’ imagination and creativity. How to effectively understand the development level of students’ space concept and further develop it is an important direction of current mathematics education research. The research content of this article is mainly based on relevant research at home and abroad and a review of current junior high school mathematics textbooks.By using literature research, questionnaire survey, interview, and quantitative analysis methods,a framework for junior high school students’ mathematical spatial concept ability is established.A survey test paper is prepared, and 300 ninth grade students from three middle schools in Changjizhou,Xinjiang are selected as samples to conduct a survey on the development status of spatial concept among junior high school students in Xinjiang,Based on the results of the questionnaire, the correlation and differences of various dimensions were analyzed to understand whether students have reached the level required by the curriculum standards. On this basis, through interviews with teachers and students, discussions were conducted on how to improve students’ spatial concepts. The analysis of student test results is as follows:(1)The overall level of students can meet the requirements of the curriculum standards, but their ability to use complex analytical reasoning and abstract problem-solving is still lacking.More than 80% of students can achieve Level 1 and Level 2,while less than 50% of students can achieve Level 3.(2)There is a significant positive correlation between students’ level of spatial concept development and their math scores. In their spatial concept tests, students with good math scores often receive higher scores. There are significant differences between different schools, but there is no significant gender difference. This study suggests that in order to further improve the development level of students’ spatial concepts, the following aspects can be taken into consideration: firstly, teachers should be good at connecting teaching with practical life,so that students can connect knowledge with life and also learn knowledge in life;Secondly, the combination of modern information technology and practical operations can better help students understand the internal structure and changing laws of spatial geometry, and attention should be paid to the cultivation of spatial concept foundations in primary school;Once again,it is necessary to improve the comprehensive quality of teachers and attach importance to the cultivation of students’ spatial concepts; Finally,it is necessary to refer to other versions of textbooks for lesson preparation and teaching, learn from each other’s strengths, leverage their strengths, and choose learning content and methods that are more suitable for students to promote the development of spatial concepts.
