The curriculum objectives of the "Mathematics Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 Edition)"(referred to as the "2022 Edition of Mathematics Curriculum Standards")issued by the Ministry of Education in 2022 clearly mention that based on the development of "core literacy",it is necessary to cultivate students to develop three "core competencies" that "can observe the real world with mathematical eyes, think about the real world with mathematical thinking, and express the real world in mathematical language".Students "can express the real world in the language of mathematics" is one of the three "core literacy",which is expressed in the overall goal of primary school mathematics and the goal of the school section,so how to cultivate the mathematical language expression ability of primary school students is very important, but there are still some problems in the training process:teachers’ understanding of mathematical language expression is biased, teachers ignore students’ personalized expression in the teaching process, and teachers ignore primary school students’ mathematical oral language expression in the teaching process.Alfred North Whitehead is a representative of "process philosophy" and is a famous British mathematician, philosopher and educator. In his book "Ways of Thinking",he argues that expression refers to the dissemination of something received in the environment, initially in the experience of the expressor, and that expression has the characteristics of situationality and individuality.Whitehead’s theory of expression contributes to the solution of these three problems. Therefore, based on Whitehead expression theory, this paper hopes to provide enlightenment for the cultivation of mathematical language expression ability of primary school students. This article is divided into five parts:The first part is the introduction, including the reason for selecting the topic, literature review, concept definition, research purpose and significance, research ideas and methods, and innovations. The second part is the second chapter of this paper, which mainly analyzes Whitehead’s expression theory, covering what expression is,the basic field of expression, the systematization of language as expression, and the connection between expression and perspective, importance, and understanding. The third part is the third chapter of this paper, which mainly analyzes the specific requirements for primary school students’ mathematical language expression in the curriculum objectives of the 2022 Mathematics Curriculum Standard, mainly including the "general goal" and "section goal" of primary mathematics, and the specific requirements for mathematical language expression in the four learning areas of primary mathematics "number and algebra","graphics and geometry","statistics and probability" and "synthesis and practice".The fourth part is the fourth chapter of this paper, starting from Whitehead expression theory,it discusses some problems in the process of cultivating primary school students’ mathematical language expression ability: teachers’ understanding of mathematical language expression is biased, teachers ignore students’ personalized expression in the teaching process, and teachers ignore primary school students’ mathematical oral expression in the teaching process. The fifth part is the fifth chapter of this article, based on Whitehead’s expression theory, and provides some enlightenment on how to properly optimize the problems existing in the cultivation of primary school students’ mathematical language expression ability: teachers should take conceptual risks to expand their understanding of mathematical language expression, teachers should pay attention to the basic field of physical expression as human expression in the teaching process, and teachers should pay equal attention to primary school students’ mathematical oral expression and written expression.
