As China’s ageing process intensifies, the proportion of empty nesters in the elderly population is increasing.Compared to other groups of elderly people, empty nesters are not only unable to take care of themselves physically, but also suffer from a sense of loneliness and powerlessness psychologically, making them a vulnerable group in society that needs urgent attention.Social work interventions can effectively improve the home environment and living standards of the empty nesters,as well as make up for the shortcomings of government departments in the elderly care sector. This paper uses the dominant perspective theory and social support theory as the theoretical support, and collects data through interviews and questionnaires. On the basis of understanding the current situation of home safety of the empty nesters in community X,it analyses the causes of the problems and the needs of the empty nesters in terms of home safety, and intervenes to improve their home safety through group work. The survey revealed that there are three main aspects of home safety for empty nesters: problems in the living environment, safety in the use of amenities and psychological health and safety. The paper then proceeds to carry out a practical intervention based on the theory of strengths perspective, through three aspects:building a safe home environment, changing the elderly’s perception and seeking their own strengths, helping the elderly to improve their home safety problems, enhancing their ability to cope with safety risks on their own, strengthening their psychological construction and finding their own strengths. The paper concludes with an evaluation and reflection of this group intervention in the home safety of empty nesters. The study shows that group work has a significant effect on improving and enhancing the home safety of the empty nesters in urban areas. The empty nesters’ awareness of self-protection was significantly enhanced after participating in the group activities, and they were aware of the importance of home safety and security. At the same time, the results of this brief intervention were not immediate, and it is a process that requires the collaboration of many parties and the concerted efforts of all sectors of society.
