| To cure poverty first and to help the poor first, education is the top priority in building a modern socialist country. However,China’s education resources have long been unevenly distributed, resulting in an unbalanced situation where the education development level in the central and western regions lags behind that in the eastern regions and that in the rural areas lags behind that in the cities. In this context,"teaching support" as a form of volunteer service to provide direct teacher assistance and balance urban and rural education resources has developed rapidly, such as "China Youth Volunteer Action","Three Supporters","Student Volunteer Service" and "Student Volunteer Service".The "teaching support" activities, such as "China Youth Volunteer Action","Three Supporters" and "Western Student Volunteer Program",which aim at helping western and rural areas speed up the pace of education modernization, have converged into a spectacular social action and have attracted wide attention of the society. What people are most concerned about is: how are the various volunteer services implemented? What is the actual effect of the teaching volunteers’ service? How can we achieve better results? In the end,all the "concerns" are focused on the quality of teaching students’ abilities.By coincidence,I was directly involved in this volunteer activity for one year as an ordinary member of the "Western University Volunteer Program"(hereinafter referred to as the Western Program).Because of my personal experience,I have a lot of heartfelt experiences, and this kind of participatory observation has led me to deeper thinking, which is also the reason why I decided to seriously explore the competency of college students in teaching from an academic perspective. This study takes the Western Project of Beitun City, the 10 th Division of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, where the author works,as a case study, and draws on the theoretical research results of volunteer teaching service, and integrates the theories and methods of educational sociology and educational psychology,in order to have a more practical consideration of teaching competency. What are the reasons why the quality of college student volunteers, especially teaching volunteers,is questioned? What are the deep-seated reasons for the low level of competency? Therefore, the research on the competency of college students in teaching from different dimensions can help to improve the service competency of college students in teaching, promote the normal teaching work of the served schools, further improve the overall service quality of college volunteers, and ensure the sustainable development of the western program in teaching to the greatest extent. This paper mainly includes the following four aspects: introduction, theoretical foundation and overview, survey on the current situation of teaching competency, analysis of problems and reasons of teaching competency, and research on countermeasures to improve teaching competency.Chapter 1 gives an overview of the concept, theoretical foundation, and survey site of university students’ teaching competency;Chapter 2 analyzes the current situation of university students’ teaching competency in the Western Program through field survey, and uses the questionnaire data to analyze the questionnaire data with high reliability and validity.Chapter 3,by collecting the most realistic and reliable first-hand textual materials, explores the four factors that restrict the improvement of the teaching competency of college students, such as the mismatch between actual positions and majors, inappropriate role transition, insufficient motivation for independent learning, and impure motivation for teaching, and summarizes and analyzes the reasons for the problems of their teaching competency, which are caused by the Western Program Project Office, the hiring of the recipient schools, and the volunteers themselves. The fourth chapter explores the countermeasures to improve the competence of college students in teaching from three aspects: training system, institutional mechanism construction and the college students themselves. |
