As an important part of China’ s excellent traditional culture,folk culture has a value and role in teaching that cannot be ignored.Teachers should make use of its pedagogical value to integrate the language curriculum with it,making it an effective tool for language construction and use,thinking enhancement and development,aesthetic appreciation and creation,and cultural transmission and understanding.The prose selections in the junior secondary language textbooks are rich in folklore resources,covering material,spiritual,social and linguistic folklore.Teachers can use the folklore elements in prose to help students interpret the structure of the text,appreciate the author’s sentiments and comprehend the connotations of folklore,so that they can gain a deeper understanding of traditional Chinese culture,thereby strengthening their cultural confidenceand national cohesion.Exploring how folklore resources can be effectively used in language teaching is also an integral part of improving traditional language teaching.The thesis is divided into five chapters.The introductory chapter introduces the origins of the study,a review of the research,and the methodology and ideas of the study.The first chapter compares the prose texts containing elements of folk culture in junior secondary language textbooks,classifies the folklore resources in prose according to four categories:material folklore,spiritual folklore,social folklore and linguistic folklore,and summarises the characteristics of their presentation in the selected prose texts.Chapter 2 explores the significance of folk culture in prose texts from three perspectives:functional positioning in teaching practice,educational value in the context of comprehensive literacy,and examination of folklore in the context of Chinese examinations.Chapter 3 summarises the current situation of teaching folk culture in selected prose texts through questionnaire surveys and teaching case studies,and explores the problems of teaching the theme of folklore in current prose teaching from the perspective of both teachers and students.The Fourth chapter discusses the basic principles of teaching folklore in prose and specific teaching strategies in response to the current situation,with the aim of providing reference for teaching the topic of folklore at present and in the future.The final chapter presents two specific teaching examples in an attempt tosystematically demonstrate the teachingof folklore in practical teaching.
