Since its introduction,core competencies have always been the focus of attention from the global education community.It provides a clear student development goal for school education,focusing on school education to cultivate people who can solve problems in knowledge,emotion,and values and have the ability to face the future.Chinese Independent high schools in Malaysia had a unique historical background and their social and cultural value in running and developing schools.K School implemented the Autonomous Learning Day in 2019,which revealed new educational opportunities in the cultivation of students’ core literacy.The author takes K school as a case,and comprehensively uses qualitative and quantitative research methods,such as: literature research,questionnaire survey and qualitative interview to carry out research.During the research process,the author conducted a questionnaire survey on 92 teachers and 179 Senior three students;conducted interviews with 30 administrative leaders,teachers and 10 students,so as to investigate the current situation of teachers and students’ about the implementation of Autonomous Learning Day in K school,in order to have a better understanding of the problem and its causes.The study found that although the implementation of Autonomous Learning Day has brought initial results,there are also some problems in the process.The themes of learning activities at each level are not clear enough,teachers and students are not used to Autonomous Learning Day,and there are large differences in the development of core literacy.The reasons for the above problems include: the understanding of all parties in the school needs to be deepened,the management mechanism of the school needs to be improved,and the awareness and ability of teachers need to be improved urgently.After analyzing the problems and their causes,the author puts forward the following suggestions for improvement,such as: establishing a vision to form a consensus on reform,taking a multi-pronged approach to improve the management system,empowering teachers to assist teaching exploration,so as to improve in the implementation and the efficiency of cultivating students’ core literacy through Autonomous Learning Day.
