Track and field events belong to the category of physical ability-dominated sports. The athletes’ physical ability level is a crucial factor that determines their performance. Therefore, conducting relevant physical ability tests to assess the athletes’ physical ability level is of great significance.Improving the athletes’ physical ability level requires high-volume and high-intensity training, but such training can easily cause athlete fatigue, leading to sports injuries and a decline in performance. Therefore,in addition to physical ability tests, new evaluation indicators should be introduced to objectively evaluate the athletes’ physical condition and injury risk factors.Functional movement screening is a simple and quantitative method for assessing basic movement ability that is widely used to prevent sports injuries and screen the athletes’ basic movement patterns. This article conducted a study on 17 track and field athletes from Hubei Province, including 14 sprinters and 3 long jumpers. The study used research methods such as literature review, expert interviews, testing, and mathematical statistics to conduct basic physical ability tests and FMS functional movement screening tests on the athletes. The purpose of the study was to investigate whether correct and incorrect movement patterns would result in differences in physical performance. The following conclusions were drawn:(1)Among the male track and field athletes in Hubei Province, the scores for upper limb strength indicators such as bench press and pull-ups were significantly lower than other strength indicators, indicating that the athletes’ upper limb strength is generally weaker than their lower limb strength, reflecting an uneven development of strength. The scores for the30-meter sprint and sit-and-reach were relatively low among male athletes, indicating poor speed and flexibility.Among female athletes, the bench press score was significantly lower than other strength indicators, indicating that the female athletes’ upper limb strength is generally weaker than other strength indicators.(2)Among the 17 track and field athletes in Hubei Province who participated in the study,71% of the athletes scored higher than 14 points, indicating that most athletes do not suffer from sports injuries due to incorrect exercise patterns.Among the seven testing movements, the average score for hurdle steps was the lowest, while the average score for shoulder joint mobility was the highest, indicating that most athletes have poor stability and flexibility in the hip, knee, and ankle joints but good shoulder joint mobility.Among the testing movements, straight leg raises and shoulder mobility had the highest number of perfect scores, while no athlete scored full marks in hurdle steps and kneeling rotations, reflecting that most athletes have poor core stability.(3)The basic physical ability scores and FMS scores of the 17 track and field athletes from Hubei Province showed a positive correlation, with athletes who had higher FMS scores also having higher physical ability scores.Among female athletes, there was a significant correlation between five indicators(vertical jump, squat, bench press,plank,pull-ups,and sit-and-reach)and FMS scores.Among male athletes, there was a significant correlation between squat, bench press, and sit-and-reach scores and FMS scores. This indicates that athletes with higher FMS scores have more correct basic movement patterns and perform better in terms of physical ability.
