With the rapid development of science and technology,it is difficult to meet the demand of society for complex and innovative talents through traditional sub-discipline teaching, and China’s education needs to cultivate students’ innovative spirit and practical ability through curriculum reform,so that they can quickly adapt to the era of globalization. However, there are few cases of STEAM education being applied to teaching practice in China in the form of integrated practical activities after school. In addition, the introduction of the 2022 Compulsory Education Chemistry Curriculum Standards provides themes for interdisciplinary activities for the development of STEAM teaching activities, which are still relatively little practiced.Based on this, this study applies STEAM concepts to practical activities in junior high school chemistry and explores specific pathways for integrating STEAM education into actual teaching. The specific work of this study includes the following aspects:Firstly, this study takes middle school grade students from the Affiliated Middle School of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou as the research subjects and conducts a pre-activity questionnaire survey on them. The results show that the inclination of middle school students towards teaching methods fits well with the concept of STEAM education.Secondly,by drawing on relevant theories and existing models of STEAM education, four major elements of teaching and learning analysis, learning resources and tools, activity procedures and activity evaluation were extracted, according to which a model of teaching and learning activities under the STEAM concept was constructed.Again, according to the design principles of STEAM teaching activities, the STEAM activity model was applied to design and implement a case study of "making a simple water purifier",and teaching practice was carried out to test the feasibility and effectiveness of the model and the effectiveness of this activity. Finally, through the processing and analysis of the data and text, the results of the study show that the STEAM model is feasible and that STEAM activities have improved students’ practical and creative skills and have had a positive effect on their understanding of the potential value of science. However, there are limitations in this study in terms of research time, practice objects and evaluation methods. We will increase the research time, expand the scope of research, optimise the evaluation methods, establish evaluation mechanisms, explore more materials, elaborate case studies and continue to carry out practical research in the future.
