The new-type urbanization strategy is the key path of China’s economic and social development, and citizenization of agricultural transfer population is an important link in the process of China’s new urbanization.Peasant workers is the key to the overall planning and integrated development of urban and rural areas. It occupies a large proportion of the population in agricultural transfer and is the key factor and main force in China’s accelerated urbanization process.Affected by the COVID-19 epidemic swept across the world, the number of peasant workers across the country in 2020 dropped by 1.8% compared with the previous year. Most peasant workers prefer local employment or employment in the province. The epidemic may become a persistent long-term impact,so how to effectively promote the urbanization of peasant workers and speed up the urbanization process may face greater challenges. The transfer of migrant workers to citizens has become a rapid breakthrough in promoting China’s urbanization process, and their willingness to become citizens is related to the smooth progress of China’s urbanization. When migrant workers enter the city, they will inevitably face a series of challenges such as finding a job, finding a place to live, and adapting to the fast-paced urban life. These challenges may be transformed into the survival pressure of migrant workers in the city. When migrant workers face the pressure of urban survival, they may choose to change their status as migrant workers to improve the situation,or they may choose to escape. So whether the urban survival pressure will have an impact on the willingness of migrant workers to become a citizen, and what kind of impact will be the core issue of this paper.Taking the urban survival pressure as the breakthrough point, this paper explores the influence and mechanism of the survival pressure on the willingness of migrant workers to become citizens. It is preliminarily confirmed that the stress coping theory can be used to explain the occurrence mechanism and influence channels of urban survival pressure and citizenization willingness, which provides empirical evidence for the urbanization process that survival pressure affects migrant workers’ citizenization willingness through social activity participation. The results show that:(1)The pressure of urban survival is a challenge faced by most migrant workers,and61% of migrant workers say that they have difficulties in urban life.(2)On the whole, urban survival pressure has a significant positive impact on migrant workers ’willingness to become a citizen. For each point of survival pressure, migrant workers’ willingness to become a citizen increases by 4.5%.By correcting selection bias, controlling endogenous bias and the robustness test, the conclusion is still robust.(3)But migrant workers face different types of survival pressure and will adopt different strategies.Specifically, work pressure has a significant inhibitory effect on migrant workers’ willingness to become citizens, income pressure has a significant promoting effect, and medical education pressure has created a clear choice for migrant workers to "leave or stay".(4)The pressure of urban survival promotes the willingness of citizens to become citizens by stimulating the enthusiasm of migrant workers to participate in social activities.
