The period of history from the end of the 19th century to the 1950s witnessedthe formation and development of the thought of educational administration inAmerican. Research in educational administration started from the end of the19th century. In the 20th century, more and more influence was posed onAmerican educational administration thought by thought and practice emergedfrom industrial management By 1950s, two phases were formed each with itsmarked features: the Age of Scientific Management from 1910 to 1930,characterized by efficiency;and the Age of Democratic Administration from1930 to 1950, characterized by democracy. This period has caught the attention of a lot of studies, and naturally becomesthe focus of this paper. But different from former research, this paper, based onthe viewpoints and theories of several American education of the period, is toprovide an analysis of the approaches they adopted to draw upon the theory andpractice of industrial management to promote the development of the theory ofeducational administration and the improvement, in order to satisfy the needs ofsocial progress and education development. This paper consists of 4 chapters. Chapter I describes the American societyand its education development from the end of the 19th century the beginning ofthe 20th century. Chapter II is the discussion of the influence that educationaladministration experienced when Taylor's Scientific Management wasintroduced into the field of education. Analysis is made on EducationalMeasurement Movement, School Survey Movement, Gary System, and FranklinBobbitt's and Ellwood Cubberley's concept on educational administration.Chapter III concentrates on the democratic administration in education after1930's, including John Dewey, Jesse Newlon, Robert Koopman and WilburYauch's viewpoints on educational administration. Chapter IV demonstrates thefeatures of the thoughts of American educational administration and the value ofits theorization. Problems which to be encountered when adapting Americaneducation administration in China are also identified, which justifies the value ofthis study and others.
