Textbooks have been playing an important role in teaching. Teachers and textbooks are inter-dependent. Being different from the product-oriented study of textbooks, this study of textbook redevelopment orientates teachers' responses to textbooks and their interpretations of them.With the transition of the role and function of textbooks, the traditional idea of teaching textbooks has been replaced by the idea of using textbooks. The curriculum reform has empowered teachers to redevelop textbooks, and it's quite necessary for teachers to use textbooks creatively during the process of teaching. But teachers, accustomed to teaching the textbooks, are hesitantly upset when they are faced with many uncertainties. They are at a loss as to how to redevelop the textbooks. This dissertation, aiming at answering this question, intends to supply some theoretical and practical guidance for teachers.The dissertation begins with the analysis of different ideas about textbooks and the orientation of the research, which is followed by the basically theoretical study of textbook redevelopment. After that, some situation analysis and textbook analysis are proposed for further study and detailed elaboration as to how to design teaching objectives and how to carry the redevelopment out. Finally, the dissertation gives an introductory explanation on students' participation in textbook redevelopment.This dissertation includes eight chapters in all.The first chapter focuses on some conflict arguments concerning textbooks and orientates the writer's research after confirming the role and function of textbooks. The theoretical analysis of textbook redevelopment is involved in the second chapter, including its basic ideas, objectives and essence, with an attempt to construct the model of textbook redevelopment. In this chapter, what textbook redevelopment means to the role transformation of teachers is also elaborated. From the third chapter on, the dissertation centers on how to redevelop textbooks systematically. The third chapter is about the situation analysis and textbook analysis, which serves as the starting point for the redevelopment. The setting up of teaching objectives based on that is the focus of Chapter Four. The next three chapters are the core of the dissertation, which discuss the principles, approaches, strategies, dimensions and techniques of the redevelopment. The eighth chapter analyzes the possibility and ways of students' participation in textbook redevelopment, to prove that students can contribute quite a lot to it.
