High school mental health education has been a popular topic in the educational circles during these years. Meanwhile, there are more and more theories about mental health education (including counseling) studied. However, there is a gap in the historical study of high school mental health education. The author thinks it is necessary to review the historical development of high school mental health education behind the grand phenomenon. This systematic historical review helps the educationists to have a clear understanding about high school mental health education It also offers a better plan for the future development of high school mental health education, which is helpful for the advancement of the immature mental health field in our country. And it helps our society to focus on the adolescents' mental health.There are some reasons for the author to focus the study in the city Shanghai. First, Shanghai is one of the earliest cities starts mental heath education. With its best outcomes and forms, this city has a special pioneer position in nation-wide. Therefore, the historical study of mental health education in this city will become the model or experience of other cities. Also, the author has the study limitation.The author draw support from great amount of study methods such as detail and accurate oral reports, background information, and document searching, which reconstructs the history of the high school mental health education in Shanghai, and also fill up the gap of the historical study in mental health education.There are four parts in this thesis:First, the research background, which introduce the significance of this thesis, the study method, the analytic frame of the study, the standard of historical stages, clarification of thesis core issue (mental health education), and so on.Second, the historical review of the high school mental health education in Shanghai, which is the axis of this thesis. This thesis divides the history of mental health education in Shanghai into three stages. The first stage is initial stage (1985-1989), the appearance is the teachers' spontaneous individual acts. The second stage is constructive stage (1989-1998). the individual acts become the organized non-governmental acts. And the counseling associations of elementary school and high school were established. These associations have a significant effect in Shanghai's mental health education. The third stage is popular stage (1999-now). Led by the educational committee, the high school mental health education in Shanghai is popularized and involve in every school.Third, the case studies, which are the experience interpretations. There are three case studies: Fenghua high school, Yanping Yang, and high school A. These three case studies represent three points of view in Shanghai's high school mental health education. Because Fenhua high school started mental health education and maintain it till now, it's development history is an epitome of Shanghai's mental health education. Through this case study, we can have another view in the history of Shanghai's mental health education. Yanping Yang is the first professional full time counseling teacher in Xuhui area. His experience helps us to know the influence of a school by a professional counseling teacher and his mindsets. High school A is a case of the general school after the popularization of mental health education. It reflects more about the reality of mental health education in Shanghai. Through the above three case studies, the author attempts to present the vivid history profoundly and cover the details about what the researchers may want to know.Forth, discussion and suggestion, which are done after the above historical study of high school mental health education, including the topics about the orientation, folks' opinion, localization, and ultimate goal of the mental health education. The author also provides the personal suggestion about the expansion of high school mental health education.At the end of the research, there is a review about the contribution and deficiency about this thesis.
