Corporate culture is an issue that attracts broad attention. The most important and fundamental work in creating an excellent corporate culture is how to measure a corporate culture. During the transformation process of Chinese commercial banks, the corporate culture plays an irreplaceable role in securing success. The features of corporate culture constitute the key elements of Chinese commercial banks' core competitiveness. Thus, it is of urgency and importance to explore the best way for Chinese commercial banks to build their cultures through theoretical and empirical study on corporate culture measurement of Chinese commercial banks.This paper, aiming at study on corporate culture measurement of Chinese commercial banks, organizes, summarizes and analyzes relevant documents and references first, and then theoretically makes design and verification of corporate culture measurement model from two perspectives: theoretical study on corporate culture measurement both at home and abroad, and analysis on characteristics of Chinese commercial banks' corporate cultures. The major work in measuring a corporate culture is to establish an index evaluation system to survey the status quo and development level of the corporate culture elements based on the content and structure of the culture, accurately measuring the comprehensive situation of the corporate culture and helping commercial banks to understand their own cultural development, so as to provide foundation for dynamic adjustment decision on corporate culture of the commercial banks.Based on theoretical study, this paper makes empirical study on corporate culture measurement from the perspective of relevance between corporate culture elements and operating performance. First, the paper makes analysis on the nature and feature of corporate culture of Chinese commercial banks under the institutional economics framework. And then, the paper by using Schein method makes serious correction on Denison OCQ scale and summarizes eight elements composing Chinese commercial banks' corporate cultures. A measurement model on corporate cultures of Chinese commercial banks thus is formed, and relevant scale is designed. Secondly, the paper reveals the inherent relevance among the eight factors through descriptive analysis, factor analysis and related analysis on the data collected by the scale; finds the linear functions about eight factors and operating performance and so on, i.e. the relationship between the elements of corporate culture and index of operating performance. And last, the paper uses typical case study to explore the reference path for Chinese commercial banks to build corporate culture on the basis of in-depth summarization of practical experience on corporate culture measurement and construction of Beijing Branch of Bank of China from 2004 to 2007.Corporate culture is a dynamic progress step by step. This character decides corporate culture construction is also a dynamic and complicated process. During the corporate culture management process, only when Chinese commercial banks measure, diagnose and evaluate their corporate culture regularly, can they accurately understand the status quo of their corporate cultures and the relevance between corporate culture elements and operating performance, compare the difference between individual bank and the whole banking sector, measure the suitability between the direction of corporate culture innovation and reform and the long-term development strategy of the bank, conduct scientific and dynamic management over corporate culture and realize the improvement of operating performance and core competitiveness. The ultimate aim of corporate culture measurement is to integrate the corporate culture into its business management and tap the excellent traditional elements in corporate culture to promote innovation and development.
