Research On The Management System Of Interdisciplinary Research In Universities

The 21st century is a thriving time for the interdisciplinary research, during this time, it is playing a very important role in knowledge production, social process, academic research and professional cultivation, and also playing an irreplaceable role in stimulating the yield of new ideas, new discovering and new technologies, which letting human being get a more comprehensive understanding on where they live. Universities, as a hub of knowledge, is responsible for the production, dissemination and application of knowledge. Discuss the effective way, which is lacking in present literatures, to facilitate interdisciplinary research in Universities has becoming an urgent and complicated problem to be solved. Based on the Systematic thought, this paper, from the perspective of management system, will discuss the way to facilitate interdisciplinary research in Universities, which will be contribute significant both in theory and practice.Applying the knowledge of education, management, philosophy science, organizational behavior, system science and interdisciplinarity, and through some research methods like literature reading, theory deducing, case study, questionnaire survey and content analysis, this paper systematically probed and embedded in the topic of the management system of interdisciplinary research in Universities. In this regard, the research of this paper mainly proceeded around three key issues:the analysis of the components of the management system of interdisciplinary research in Universities; the construction of the model of the management system of interdisciplinary research in Universities; and the strategy on the effectively reforming of the management system of interdisciplinary research in Universities.Through the research, this paper got some original conclusions:(1) Giving the concept of the management system of interdisciplinary research in Universities:that is the genetic term of the institutions, the arrangement of institutions and the design of policies which armed to facilitate the development of interdisciplinary research in Universities, and it contains six main elements, which are strategic orientation, division setting and duty allocation, institutional design, organizational form, and support condition. And institutional design is taken for the most import elements of all.(2) Combining the successful practices of the development of interdisciplinary research in MIT and Stanford University, testified by the theoretical model of the management system of interdisciplinary research in Universities which constructed from 221 samples of questionnaire survey, the research founding is that all the 23 impact factors which constructed the model of the management system of interdisciplinary research in Universities such as the establishment of faculty joint-hiring policies, the building of set-up and sunset mechanism of interdisciplinary research organizations, the formation of the academic culture which encouraging the interdisciplinary research, and etc. has a very significantly positive impact on the performance of the interdisciplinary research in Universities.(3) Based on the construction of the management system of interdisciplinary research in Universities, considering the present situation of the Universities in China, this paper gives some advice on reforming of the management system of interdisciplinary research in Universities of China, systematically, which supposed to promote the development of interdisciplinary research.The main contributions of this paper still includes the following parts:putting forward the motivation mechanism of interdisciplinary research in Universities, which forms the fundamental of the advanced exploring of the motivation mechanism of conducting the interdisciplinary research in Universities; concluding the trait and skill of interdisciplinary researcher, which provides the evidence for the interdisciplinary team to organize and recognize the researchers; identifying the elements of the management system of interdisciplinary research in Universities and the relative importance of them, which offers the reference for facilitating interdisciplinary research in Universities; Constructing the model of the management system of interdisciplinary research in Universities and giving the advice on reforming the management system of interdisciplinary research in Universities, which gives a new idea for the management of interdisciplinary research in Universities.
