Abstract/Summary:
This was an exploratory study to examine what role mindfulness has in preventing or counteracting psychotherapist burnout. A model relating mindfulness to burnout was proposed, using work setting as a moderating variable. Data was collected from 56 Masters' level, licensed psychotherapists, who completed the Five Factor Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) as well as some demographic questions. The total mindfulness score from the FFMQ was compared to each of the three scales of the MBI: Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Personal Accomplishment. Moderated multiple regression (MMR) analysis showed that total mindfulness was a statistically significant predictor of the variance for personal accomplishment, but not for emotional exhaustion or depersonalization. These findings suggest that mindfulness plays a role in feelings of personal accomplishment.
