Female workers' migration and city integration are important practical issues in both the Republican and Contemporary China.Tracing back to the late Qing and Republican period(1900-1949)will provide us a historical comprehension of workers' condition during the early industrialization and modernization in China and offer a historical and comparative reference for current urban peasant worker problems.Taking the perspective of historical institutionalism, this dissertation primarily centers on how institutions change, and what is the relationship between institutional change and citizenization.‘Institution' here includes formal organizations, laws, policies, and informal conventions, rituals, beliefs and values.Through analyzing documentaries such as archives, newspapers and periodicals, biographies, travel brochures, folk songs, company histories and oral histories,I try to demonstrate modern citizenization from four aspects.First, this dissertation outlines historical and geographical conditions of Tianjin, which has a decisive influence on Tianjin's modern development, who plays as a costal open city and has a gradually extended interior.A set of reform movements that occurred in modern China, especially the westernization movement, provide Tianjin a government-business cooperation regime legacy, which has a long-term effects on other institutional changes.Second, work and social network support is critical for migrants' city adaptation. For these rural migrants, they have to find some jobs, obtain salary and welfare, acquire knowledge and skills, and reconstruct social networks for job hunting and protection in workshop,or for emotional comfort and self identity. In turn, these processes are also used by political agents as power discipline tools.Third, this dissertation will illustrate female workers' role and value transformation. In modern China, government and society always endow new roles and identities to women(such as “urban women”,“new women”,or “new citizen”)for modernization purpose.Along with this process, women's time and right values had changed. No matter in the deviance or resistence behavious, subjectivity gradually emerged. The fourth part is the conlusion. In the seventh chapter,I reviewed the modern citizenization from institutional persective, then summarize migrants' urbanizational process which based on factories' welfare provision and citizen discipline as “factorydepend citizenization”.This type of citizenization constitutes one institutional sourses of Danwei regime, additionally provide pratical experiences to contemporary citizenization.
