Belt conveyor is a typical rigid and flexible multi-body system that includes not only rigid motion of drive system but also the viscoelastic vibration of belt. A accurate 3D modeling of Conveyor is the basis of dynamic characteristics analysis. Previous, the dynamic characteristics of the belt is mostly concentrated in longitudinal study. With the development of virtual prototyping technology, the research of lateral and vertical dynamic characteristics is possible.The paper firstly expounds the basic vibration theory of conveyor belt. According to the viscoelastic property of belt, we establish dynamic equation of belt conveyor, and calculate the belt tension with the theory. Research on two kinds of modeling method based on different multi-body theories of Recur Dyn/Belt toolkit. One kind is based on the theory of multi rigid body dynamics-Assembly modeling method. This is widely used in 3D modeling of belt. Another kind of modeling method is based on the finite element theory of flexible body-Shell modeling method. The method combined with finite element method(FEM) and multi-body dynamics theory(MBD), not only for belt conveyor system analysis, but also good at structure dynamics analysis. Using these two kinds of modeling method of Recur Dyn, we respectively establish 3D model of conveyor belt and simulation.The paper uses the Shell module to establish 3D modeling of conveyor for the first time. Under the two modeling methods, we compare the simulation time and some important dynamic parameters, such as tail roller speed, belt speed, tension and displacement. Analyze two kinds of method computational efficiency and accuracy after compared with the theoretical value. The study found that both models can correctly reflect the dynamic characteristics of conveyor. Compared with the Assembly model, Shell model is more efficient and closer to the actual situation. Shell model can also calculate the vertical and lateral dynamic parameters other than longitudinal.
