This dissertation studies Guibei folk houses from the point of view of technology, including ecotechnique and physical environmental technology. The former focuses on technologies friendly to ecological environment from the aspect of ecology and the later focuses on humans' requirement to acoustic environment, light environment and thermal environment from the aspect of building physics. Studying interior physical environment of Guibei folk houses and making suggestion for improvement can be helpful to enhance comfortability of residence. Studying reasonable technologies in Guibei folk houses and generalizing experiences can be helpful to local construction and sustainable development.First, the dissertation discusses the form of villages and individual buildings in Guibei folk houses and summarizes influencing factors to Guibei folk houses, including natural, cultural and technical factors. The natural factors involve climax, landform, materials and population. The cultural factors involve production, custom, external effect, religion and philosophy. The technical factors involve construction technology and structural form. All these interactional and interinhibitive factors exert an influence to the origin, development and evolution of Guibei folk houses as a whole.Then, the dissertation analyses ecological techniques adopted in Guibei folkhouses, involving site selection and layout of villages, exploitation of natural resources, building on stilts, energy consumption and environment. As for site selection, most villages in the Guibei area are sited on flat, sunny and draughty river valleys or sloping fields, which can prevent the villages from being washed out by flood. These villages are laid out with proper density, distance and scale in harmony with the capacity of the natural ecological environment. Natural resources such as land, water and trees are exploited according to the law of nature so as to obtain sustainable development. Moreover, building on stilts is an environmentally sound method of building that can prevent the earth's surface being destroyed and help to develop mountanious areas in accordance with the climax.Finally, the dissertation analyses physical environmental technologies of Guibei folk houses, including heat insulation of building enclosure structures, natural ventilation, solar radiation protection, rainproof, damp proof and lighting of houses and sound insulation of walls. In addition, two folk houses are tested on the thermal performance. Through the analysis, the dissertation sums up useful experiences and puts forward suggestions for improvement.
