This paper addresses the necessity and importance of the neighborhood intercourse in modern residential district. The lack of neighborhood intercourse has resulted in many problems: the neighborhood relationship becomes cold, people are feeling lonely and unsafe, and lacking hospitality. A real investigation of north China residential district is made to discover the different environment usage requirements of different people. Based on the real case analysis, from the behavior and psychology points of view, this paper proposes a better style and functionality of composition elements in environment and landscape designing to efficiently improve neighborhood intercourse. In this paper, through the traditional district construction reference and investigation and the compare between traditional district and modern district, the differences are found to be a clue of modern residential district. In the end, a conclusion is made about how to proactively build a human-oriented intercourse space for modern human residential district by environment and landscape design. The first part of this paper, chapter one to chapter four, firstly, addresses in details the problems to study, the recent research progress and the problem causes; and gives the research purpose and scope, the research methods, the creative points and research content; Secondly, based on the related concepts, demonstrates the necessity and importance of neighborhood intercourse and the different intercourse space requirements of people at different ages; thirdly, by listing the environment and landscape elements in residential district, gets two representative intercourse spaces– near-building green area and refuge-like landscape, which serves most resident intercourse activities.The second part of this paper, chapter two to chapter seven, by real investigation, analyzes in details two typical residential intercourse spaces in north China– near-building green area and refuge-like landscape. Not only are they the locations serving most residential intercourse activities, also the important elements in residential environment and landscape designing. Through the analysis, fanning out from a point to an area, this paper gives the suggestions about how to build better landscape design elements to efficiently improve residential intercourse and improve the styles and functionalities of landscape design elements. Chapter seven addresses the importance of the traditional district construction guidance to modern residential environment design. The last part of the paper, makes the conclusion– how to proactively build a better neighborhood intercourse space by landscape designing. There are seven suggestions: the environment and landscape design of modern residential district should represent the sequence of intercourse space; the environment and landscape design should facilitate the residents intercourse; to create intercourse space with proper size; to emphasize the importance of intercourse space and location in design; a controllable space can raise the enthusiasm to participate in the intercourse activity; to create a harmonious intercourse space in sharing lives; the landscape design of the neighborhood intercourse space should concentrate on the activities and should be able to appeal activities of the whole residence zone.
