A Study On The Campus And Architecture Legacy Of The Baptist Universities In The 1890s-1930s China

With the evergoing development of research over historical architects in China, and as a form of cultural herics, they begin to attract some scholar's concern. However, relevant studies and documents are still insufficient, and moreover, some recognition of church schools are still incorrect.By collecting nomerous examples and document, this paper combine the culture and feature of architecture with China's social background and historical development in modern times, as well as high value methods from architecture linguistics, architecture morphology, sociology, and historigraphy. In this thesis, we trace developemt of architectures in China's church universities; conclude their similarities and differences in form; analyze collision and merge between chinese and western cultures; analyze the vague expression of location spirit in these universities; and finally explore ways of protection and renewal towards these buildings after analyzing different completed projects in reality.In the first part, this paper make clear its research purpose and the meaning, together with a brief narration of some background information of these structures left over by history.Based on analysis on social backdrop and historical development of modern times in China, the second part talks about the divertion of church universities'functional quality and architecture style. From the analysis over an Ameican architector Mofie's practice, this part also goes on to architectors'attempts and achievements in designing buildings in church universities.The third part comes to reasons of features of church universities in modern China from perspectives of social background, political form and climats of different places, etc. And it cite as examples Yanjing University, Hujiang University, Jinling University, Jinling Female's University, Lingnan University, Yali Institution, and West-China Xiehe University. It also states the location spirit and vage qualifications that these universities bear.In the fourth part, combined with the detailed design plan of Shanghai Science and Technology University, we make a tantative attempt in exploring ways of protection and renewal towards historical buildings in church schools.The conclusion acts as a summary of the whole thesis, and mentions the present writers's opinion towards protection of the cultural relics preserved in China's church schools, as well as suggestions for further stuies in this field.
