Pinellia ternate is an important medicinal plant. According to statistics of 558 Chinese herbal medicine prescriptions, the frequency of Rhizoma Pinelliae used rank 22th.But because of the dissimilarity of the variety, habitat, harvested time and processed methods etc., the quality of Rhizoma Pinelliae exists big difference, and also influencing its pharmacology function. We collects 19 samples from different altitudes, harvested in different time and processed in different methods , using RP-high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC),Gas chromatography (GC),direct electrometric titration and educt, and have carried on the research of Rhizoma Pinelliae, hoping to find the more suitable environment and reasonable harvested time or processed method of it.Rhizoma Pinelliae also has very extensive pharmacology functions, the Chinese pharmacopoeia records it"-eliminating Dampness, dispelling phlegm and calming vomiting". Today it can be used to cure acute mastitis, acute and chronic purulent tympanitis, and the vet use it to treat the inflammation of the throat. The modern research proves Rhizoma Pinelliae still have anti-tumor, antibiosis, cholesterol-lowering, anti- heart rhythm disorder and sedative and hypnotic actions etc. As for its anti- tumor, anti-early pregnancy and the function of the circulatory system, studies are already more mature, but the sedative and hypnotic effect still exists a controversy, although some clinical data report compound prescribe have this function, the pharmacology research of the single medicine is few. Therefore, this text carry on a research to study the sedative and hypnotic action of single flavor of Rhizoma Pinelliae, and compared with its same genus plants Pinellia pedatisecta and Typhonium flagelliforme.Using the method inducing dormancy of the mice with subliminal and suprathreshold dose of sodium pentobarbital adding Rhizoma Pinelliae extracts, the sedative and hypnotic act of this herb was evaluated, and compared with Pinellia pedatisecta and Typhonium flagelliforme. Giving mice the maximum concentration and volume of these extracts to observe the acute oral toxicity. In the meantime, using the method of direct electrometric titration to determine the total free organic acids so as to control the quality of these herbs respectively. Results: The high and low doses of Rhizoma Pinelliae extract, the high dose of Pinellia pedatisecta...
