Objective To study the levels of serum amyloid A(SAA) in patients with chronic renal failure(CRF) .Methods 62 patients with non-dialysis CRF were recruited in the study, including 16 patients with the early period of CRF,18 patients with the intermediate stage ,28 patients with the advanced stage renal disease. The control have 20 normals. SAA,c-reactive protein(CRP) ,lipoprotein a(LPa) and serum albumin(Alb) ,hemoglobin(Hb) were monitored in all groups. Results The levels of SAA and CRP increased in patients with CRF as compared with the control(P﹤0.05).The levels of SAA have significant differences in the three groups with CRF (P﹤0.01).However, the differences of the levels of CRP and LPa between the early period and the intermidate stage of CRF were not significant(P﹥0.05).The contents of SAA were closely positive correlated with creatinine and negative with glomerular filtration rate(GFR) (P﹤0.05). The levels of Alb,Hb in patients with CRF decreased as compared with the control, and notably negative correlated with SAA(r =-0.461,-0.643, P﹤0.01,respectively). The masculine rate of SAA with diabetes mellitus increased as compared with non-DM(P﹤0.05).Conclusion Compared with CRP and LPa, SAA was earlier and more sensitive in reflecting the micro-inflammatory status which might contribute to malnutrition and anaemia in patients with CRF.
