Background Translation For News Reports On China For Foreign Audience

Background translation in Chinese-English translation means explaining in English peculiar Chinese things and expressions for the sake of minimizing differences between the Chinese and Western cultures and compensating for a lack of equivalents as involved in the translation process. It is a necessary and effective way of bridging the gap of response between the readers of translation and of the original.This thesis, focusing on the background translation for news reports on China for foreign audience and proceeding from the fundamental theories of translation, looks into the connotation of background rendering, the specialities of journalistic translation and the major functions of background translation, i.e. translating for clarity's sake, weaving invisible opinions and enhancing readability. Based on the concrete analysis of first-hand examples, it also suggests several approaches to background translation for news reports on China for audience abroad. Among other things, application of interpretive translation, varied means of inserting background materials, and the like.This thesis aims at arousing journalistic translators' awareness of the efficacious approaches of background rendering in translating peculiar Chinese things and expressions. Meanwhile the author hopes the discussion and methods herewith in this thesis can, to some extent, shed light on (would-be) journalistic translators in their prospective fieldwork.
