English Translation Of Chinese Political Neologisms

Since China's reform and opening up to the outside world, great changes have taken place in all fields of our society. New things, new phenomena and new concepts spring up in succession. As a result, a large number of Chinese neologisms reflecting them have been emerging. Language is not only a symbol of politics, economy, ideology, culture and social life, but also a carrier of cross-cultural communication. Since Chinese neologisms are the latest demonstration of China's political, economic, ideological, cultural and social development, it is a most important task for language workers to translate them into accurate and idiomatic English in time. The English translation of Chinese neologisms plays a significant role in promoting the interaction among peoples of different nations, including introducing China's newest progress, exchanging information and opinions.Many language workers have made great efforts to study neologism-translation. However, these studies only list the Chinese neologisms, their English version and their major translation methods without making a systematic explanation on the classification, features and translation principles of these neologisms. The research topic of this paper is focused on the English translation of Chinese political neologisms. After giving a definition of Chinese political neologism, the writer makes an overall introduction of their classification and features. Based on this, the writer analyzes the translation theories that can guide the English translation of Chinese political neologisms, including the principles of "faithfulness", "equivalence", "language functions" and "cultural communication". Considering these theories as the general principles and paying attention to the features of Chinese political neologisms, the writer points out several practical translation principles, including comprehensive and accurate comprehension of the original, understandability, accuracy, naturalness and smoothness of the translation, and adoption of common practice. Guided by these principles, the writer puts forward four useful translation techniques, including replacement, literal translation, literal translation plus explanation and free translation. The translator should flexibly adopt these techniques and choose the best one according to the context and cultural connotation of neologisms.
