This thesis takes a brief review on studies in the past and at present of Chinese idiom from three aspects. Based on all kinds of viewpoints about the idiom's definition, the paper maintains that the idiom is one kind of proverbs, and is also fixed expression which has been used by many generations with written color, semantic unity and four-character as its basic form. From different perspectives, we sum up the etymologies and analyze the structure of idioms. As a result, we find that all the idioms are distinctly characteristic of semantic symmetry not only in basic form and grammatical structure, but also in semantic structures. In the light of the study on the phonetics of idioms, we have concluded that at the basic rhythm level of idioms, level and oblique tones and phonology are characteristic of harmonious harmony symmetry, and the distribution of Kaihe(开合) of clear regular pattern. Thus, we can say that the proverbial voice in the structure and pronunciation has a prominent feature: equilibrium and symmetry. Understanding and grasping the feature of equilibrium and symmetry is beneficial to furthering the comprehension of idioms semantically.
