Dynamic Equivalence Theory As Applied In Translation Practice

The traditional study about idioms is generally descriptive not prescriptive. In this thesis, the author brings forward the view that dynamic equivalence theory by Nida is a theory applicable to guide and check the translation of animal idioms and animal images in them. This thesis falls into six parts. The introduction part introduces dynamic equivalence theory and the structure of the whole thesis. Chapter One specifies the subjects studied in this thesis---animal idioms and animal images in them. Chapter Two is a detailed study of dynamic equivalence theory. Special effort is made to clarify several essential concepts involved in this theory. Then the following chapter focuses on how the dynamic equivalence theory works when it is applied to translating animal idioms in literary works. Chapter Four offers three common modes of approach to animal idioms and six general approaches to animal images in those idioms. Then comes the conclusion part of the thesis. The thesis attempts to illustrate the feasibility of dynamic equivalence theory in the translation of animal idioms. In the process of illustration, several key concepts of this theory have been expounded, which hopefully will shed new light on the recognition of this theory. After careful observation, several approaches to animal idioms and images in them are offered, which may serve as modes for translating animal idioms and even other idioms.
